Joining

How Do I Join The Fire Department?

We are so glad you asked!

Applicants must be 18 years of age, have a valid drivers license, and be in good health.

Most fire department members live in or near the City, but it is possible to live in a rural or remote area and still be a firefighter.

To apply, please complete the application form (downloadable below) and return to City Hall along with all of the required documents listed.

Once your application has been reviewed, you may be accepted as a recruit, and begin attending training.

Important considerations

Firefighting is not a hobby.  Membership in the fire department is a serious commitment of your time, and this will have an effect on others in your life.  Be sure that you discuss your intentions with:

  • Your spouse and family: You can expect to be called away, on occasion, in the middle of the night or from family meals and celebrations. On the other hand, your family may enjoy the social aspects of the fire department, which can be supportive in many ways.
  • Your employer: Most local businesses are very supportive of the fire department and understand the need for people to be able to leave their jobs to respond to emergencies. Let your supervisor know about your intention to join the fire department, and find out if there are any limitations on your ability to respond.
